Choosing Theo By Victoria Aveline

My Rating of Choosing Theo:

Choosing Theo CoverSummary of Choosing Theo:

Being kidnapped by aliens is only the start of Jade’s problems. Thankfully, her rescuers, an alien race known as the Clecanians, are willing to protect her, but she has to stay on their planet for one year and respect the rules of their culture–including choosing a husband. Jade refuses at first but decides to play along until she can find a way back to Earth.

Theo, a scarred mercenary who prefers a life of solitude, is stunned when Jade selects him as her husband. After years of being passed over, he never imagined he would be chosen, and neither did anyone else. Only one explanation makes sense…the curvy enticing female must be a spy, and Theo’s determined to break her cover using any means necessary.

As Jade and Theo are forced to spend time together, their chemistry becomes undeniable. But neither can afford to bring love into the equation, especially since Jade seems determined to go home. After all, she can’t possibly stay here, right?

My Opinion of Choosing Theo:

Have I read many alien stories? No, this might be my second series all around.

Is this my favorite alien story? Yes. Yes, it is.

Plot:

At first, I thought this was going to be a 3.5 at best. The first few chapters bored me, even though she had been literally abducted.

But I get it. Like all Fantasy books, this series has its own set of rules. Rules of what we are unaware of and need to be taught. It is always easiest when they throw a new person into the world, be it the main character or not, to explain.

And boy did it explain. Were the first few chapters boring? Sure. But they were so informative, that I was not confused one bit during the book. It was amazing how easy the flow of the book seemed afterward.

And the plot itself? I loved it. It had a main plot that was moved to the side until our main character developed enough of an emotional attachment. The little plots, like him thinking she’s a spy, were just amusing all the way. The frustrations of his accusations and her defense were a running joke that kept me smiling for the entirety of the book.

Writing Style:

Look, this might not have wowed me like my last review, the summer I turned pretty, but it was pretty simple. There were times were I laughed and gasped in shock. Overall, it does place you at the scene with them which is always such a nice effect with books.

Especially when it has such detailed spicy scenes.

Main Female Character:

Houston, we have a winner.

Here we have someone who is:

– not an idiot,

– has some skill but isn’t overpowered,

– not overly skinny to encourage unrealistic body images,

– doesn’t ignore red flags,

– likes animals,

– mature enough to talk about her emotions and push them so that there are no misunderstandings

– isn’t a pushover, but isn’t a raging bitch,

– get along with other girls,

– and open with her sexuality without it being her one defining trait.

Overall, I LOVED Jade. She mentioned going to therapy and being aware of bad habits and how to stop them. She did not let Theo stomp all over her or even yell at her in the slightest. She forgave him for having a temper, especially since she never let him take it too far anyway. She realizes her mistake in judging the alien planet’s custom, even though it is superior to ours.

I truly truly loved her.

Main Male Character:

He never pushed too far.

Look, I’ve read enough books with the whole tall, dark, and handsome, and in most of those, the man always does something that makes me not forgive them.

I always imagine it this way, if my best friend came to me and told me about Theo, I would approve. I’d approve 10 times over.

I also, for the first time, enjoyed how insecure he was. Don’t get me wrong, I prefer my men confident. It was just adorable how he wondered if she could like him.

It was also hilarious that he thought she was a spy, all because she couldn’t possibly like him. If your type is the whole silent, rough around the edges, affectionate, grumpy but secretly a teddy bear at heart man? This book is definitely for you.

Bonus:

It’s currently free on Audible if you have a subscription. AND it’s voiced by a man. 😉

Recommendation for choosing Theo:

If you have never read an alien book, this is the one to start with. I know what your first question is going to be, but the strangest thing is that he has tattoos and is 6’5.

Also if you are the type of woman that likes the type of man I described, then go read this NOW.

Is Choosing Theo not for you?
