My Rating of The Discovery Of Magic:
Summary of The Discovery of Magic:
Welcome to Elementals Academy, where magic is the only hope of survival, forbidden romance beckons, and an ancient secret threatens to end it all.
Summer Donovan thinks paying her way through her expensive private college is her biggest problem.
She’s about to find out how wrong she is.
Because when the president of the most exclusive sorority on campus goes off the rails and bullies her, Summer defends herself with something she never knew she had.
Magic.
It turns out she’s a witch. But that’s only the start of the surprises in store for her.
Soon after her magical breakthrough, Summer learns she’s destined to attend Elementals Academy-an exclusive school dedicated to witches descended from the Greek gods.
At Elementals Academy, Summer finally finds the thing she’s wanted her whole life: a place where she fits in. Although that doesn’t last long, thanks to her magic not working the way it’s supposed to, and no one knowing why.
But her biggest challenge isn’t schoolwork. Or magic. It’s Zane Caldwell-the iciest, most attractive, and most mysterious student at the school. Despite the way Zane’s warm to her one minute and cold the next, Summer feels an irresistible draw to him.
While struggling to understand her feelings for Zane, Summer soon discovers she has another problem-one far more dangerous. There are secrets lurking within the hallowed halls of Elementals Academy, and she may hold the key to unraveling them. If she can survive long enough… and figure out who to trust.

My Opinion of The Discovery Of Magic:
Maybe it’s on me. Maybe my expectations were too high. I saw a 4.28 rating on Goodreads and a best-selling author title and I fell for it.
Or maybe, this book is awful and the people rating it a 5 star are 9 year olds who just discovered reading for fun.
I’m sorry. I’m going to try and be nicer.
But that’s not going to be possible without lying, so let’s not.
Characters:
Guys, she is NOT like other girls. She is a freak of nature. She is special. She is abnormal. She just wants to fit in.
I just summarized half of the book.
Truly, I get it. The author wanted to emphasize how special she is. But did she have to do it in every single chapter, in every paragraph? With the amount of times I rolled my eyes, I’m surprised they didn’t stay that way.
I don’t know at what age this author wrote The Discovery of Magic, I’m assuming 13 and she was really excited to be an official teenager.
Every chapter, there is drinking, there is mentions of her beauty and how every guy wants to nail her. She is so different. The things happening are so unusual and it means she is a freak of nature.
She is good friends will literal heroes in the book, because she amused them once.
The hottest guy in school, who is blander than a potato, is obsessed with her.
Relationship:
The amount of times the word “ugh” came out of my mouth… I must have broken a world record.
Let me break it down:
Her gut tells her that she can trust him, even after he lied to her. Repeatedly.
She keeps asking him why he cared enough to get a sexual predator off her back. Which, for anyone taking notes, is lower than the bare minimum but somehow it translates to him being jealous.
He humiliated her in public and yet she wanted to talk to him in private to see the real him.
She keeps telling her friends that she knows him well enough to know when he is lying. Even though they spent about an hour together at most.
She goes out on a date with him, in the middle of a forest.
The middle of a forest.
I’m so done.
If I have to read one more time about how she can’t stop thinking about him, even though there was no build up. He didn’t do anything remotely interesting They didn’t share any special scenario together, I’m going to barf.
Side characters:
I don’t know if you’ve read my other reviews. Some of those include a buttload of praise towards making good side characters. The reason why those reviews praise side characters so much, is because of book slike The Discovery of Magic.
They have no life. These characters where basically just waiting for her to show up. Somehow, her roommate has been at that school for years and does not have a best friend. The guys, all waiting to nail the hot new girl. The friendship circle was just waiting for that one person that has something happen to them every day so they can discuss it. I’m just going to assume none of these characters talked to each other, until the main character showed up. Lunch was spent in SILENCE.
I mean, really. The most popular person, a literal hero, wanted her to live with them. The hottest guy at school can’t stop staring at her. The creepiest guy in school didn’t do anything to get himself suspended before he met her.
Plot:
I don’t know either. She discovered her magic in the first two chapters and that’s pretty much the most exciting thing to happen.
Writing Style:
You’d think after all of this, I’d have something nice to say.
Let me burst your bubble.
I wrote better One Direction fanfictions when I was 9.
This is exactly the type of story, with exactly the writing style someone would have, if they were writing a Zayn Malik fanfiction on Wattpad.
OMG THAT’S EXACTLY WHAT THIS IS. THAT’S WHY HIS NAME IS ZANE.
I just thought of this, and it makes total sense. Nothing can convince me otherwise.
Recommendation for The Discovery Of Magic:
Why would you still ask me this. Go read a real book.
